Established in 2001, the Dot NAME universal domain extension is the single TLD intended for personal sites only. These domain names can consist of personal or fictitious names, aliases and/or other labels people are popular by. Initially, just 3rd-level registrations were permitted, so if you wanted to register john.doe.name, you had to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Already purchased third-level names remained online.
